Media Update

In a post a few months back, I lamented the media’s focus on celebrity issues at the expense of reporting actual news. Over the last few days, the media has been fortunately reporting on the things that matter…but then again it’s pretty hard to ignore multiple bombs in London and a category 4 hurricane bearing down on the panhandle of Florida.

It was amusing watching over the weekend as the live reporters covered the hurricane. They all told the viewers to “do as I say (evacuate), not as I do” as they braced themselves in 80 mph winds. We almost lost CNN’s Anderson Cooper to an errant Ramada Inn sign. You could almost hear the collective disappointment of the media as Dennis weakened a bit just prior to making landfall.

I will give some members of the media credit for reporting on the 10th anniversary of the massacre in Srebrenica. Unfortunately, that item seems to have disappeared from the headlines now, in favor of the much more important issue of Hillary Clinton’s comparison on the president to Alfred E. Neuman.

…and so it goes.

UK Friends

I spoke with one of our UK friends, Duncan, on the phone and they are fine. Dunc is in Chester and ‘bat has gone off camping in Wales. They have given up their flat in London, and as they always have impeccable timing, they just gave it up last week.

When he answered the phone I said, “you survived!” Dunc said, “we weren’t in London.” I said, “no, I meant George Bush’s visit! He hasn’t crashed into you on his bicycle has he?” Dunc laughed and said, “well he hasn’t left yet.”

Now we just need to hear from Ed Deluzain, my high school English teacher who has just gone over there for a visit.

Sentenced to More Meetings

Well, I asked for it so I only have myself to blame. I was appointed to the City of Frisco’s Planning & Zoning Commission tonight.

It was a pretty exciting meeting, even if I hadn’t been a candidate. 39 people applied and there were 5 spots available. 1 was for the remaining 12 months of a two-year term, due to a recent resignation. 4 are full two-year terms. I wasn’t among those nominated for the 1 year term, but I was the first name nominated for the first of the full two-year terms. 2 more people were nominated (both of whom were later appointed) and I was appointed.

Without going into too much detail, there were a lot of nominations and votes required to fill out the remaining slots. It was really a nail-biter for the others who were nominated.
